Halloween Spirit

Hello Hello

What does Halloween means to you all?

I personally sees it as an excuse solely just to drink during the week and maybe to purchase cheap candies the day after. I know and seen a lot of people who actively participate in this event months before it arrives. They spent countless efforts on preparing multiple costumes for the upcoming parties. Honestly, its great to see people put on spooky costumes and some of them look amazing but please keep it down on the slutty scale. I want to see a scare-the-shit-out-of-myself Chucky costume, not slutty Chucky. If that is even possible.

Oh and of course carving pumpkins. Can't forget about that. Carving pumpkins are fun until they rot and its time to clean them out. They serve as a great decoration for Halloween as well as the fall season. The bright orange tone brings the joy out in the season where all the trees are turning yellow, orange and brown.

Ok. I'm pretty sure that many of you know that Halloween is celebrated on the 31st October. Now let me enlighten you a little bit about the story behind it. So the word "Halloween" means hallowed evening and was known to early European celebrators as All Hallows' Eve. All Hallows' Eve and All Saints' Day (1st November) both paid homage to saints ("hallows" = saints).

Its believed that Halloween marks the time of the year when seasons change and also when the boundary between two worlds becomes thin, enabling people to connect with the dead.

Back in the days, people used to dress in simple animal hides or saints (two different groups with different cultural beliefs), enjoyed special feasts, made lanterns (hence jack-o-lanterns). Some rituals eventually evolved into a much more lighthearted fun and games. For instance, apple bobbing. It represents the concept of connecting the dead and is now replaced with fortune telling. Apples would be selected to represent all of the women's suitors, and the guy's apple that she ended up biting into would supposedly represent her future husband.

This is another ritual that I have never seen before but it popped up as I was looking through the history of Halloween. Its mirror gazing. I supposed that people hoped to catch a vision of their future by looking into the mirror. There were reports of fortune cookie being given out during earlier times.
Messages were written with milk were folded and placed into walnut shells. The shells would then be heated over fire, causing the milk to brown just enough for the message to appear on the paper for the recipient.

I hope you learned a little in my update of Halloween where I typed this over more than a glass of wine and horror movies. Maybe I should dress up for the occasion sometime just to feel the spirit of it.

H2.
