Job Hunting
Hey guys,
Job hunting can be a nightmare to even the smartest people with the best credentials. It doesn't quite help that you're an athlete in the past or a board member of your club. I have read a lot of articles about the things to do as a fresh graduate to get noticed by a hiring company to be a data analyst so I though to share a couple tips that I found out are really helpful.
1. Projects, projects, and projects
This is basically a showcase of your skills. Even though they're academic projects but they're something thats worth noticing off. Besides that, pick up some mini 'pet projects' to hone your skills as well. It is worth the hard work you put in.
2. Show your projects
There's no point of doing those projects if you don't show them! Show your thought process, approach on analysis and procedures taken. People care about how you solve something, not the answer. Even if you get it wrong but your style of approach is what they care about.
3. Networking
Its not social netPLAYING, its social netWORKING! Most of the companies hire people that they're familiar with rather than those that they don't. The more they know about your personality, the better your chances are at getting a go. So get out of the door and start attending local career meetings!
4. Awesome pitch
This is the part where you sell yourself. Come up with an awesome/unique pitch about yourself. It a summarise of your experiences that's related to what you want to do. It has to be short and sweet. Remember you're basically selling your services.
5. Contact recruiters, headhunters and hiring managers
Like I've mentioned before, networking. Connecting with local recruiters and headhunters are pretty important as well. Talk to them once in a while to make sure that they still have your in mind if anything suitable arises.
6. Contact your friends
At last I've reach the best part. Referrals by your friends. This is basically a trust issue. I've ask many people that worked in big companies but due to my status, it didn't work out for me. This will work if you're in the correct place at a correct time.
That is all I have for now and have been using in my job hunting process in 2 countries. It has been proven useful and I hope it helps you too. Let me know if it works for you and if you have any other suggestions, leave a comment!
